22-23 May Working with Addictions with Michael Clemmens
We are pleased and excited to be able to offer this workshop with Michael Clemmens, Ph.D. Dr. Clemmens is a psychologist in private practice in Pittsburgh, Pa. He has worked in the addiction field since 1976. He is a professional staff member of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, presently serving as the Chairperson of the Center for Clinical Theory and Practice. His book Getting Beyond Sobriety: Clinical Approaches to Long Term Recovery recently published by Jossey-Bass outlines a developmental stage model of recovery from addiction.

Recovery from addiction begins with abstinence or sobriety. But this fundamental basis of recovery is only the beginning. In order to maintain recovery, addicts need to develop certain self-support skills and interpersonal capacities. These skills and capacities are developed in stages of recovery. Each recovering addict has his/her particular challenges as recovery progresses. In this workshop, Dr. Clemmens will outline these stages, along with the necessary skills for the client and stage related interventions for the clinician. The format will be lecture, some small group interaction and discussion. The workshop will be of interest to those working with clients addicted to alcohol, drugs, and other substances or processes (e.g. gambling, food, sex).

Cost: The cost for the two-day workshop (9.30a.m. – 5.30p.m.) is £120. A £60 non-refundable deposit is payable with your application. Cheques to ‘Manchester Gestalt Centre’ please.

Application: Please apply to Peter Philippson at Manchester Gestalt Centre (address and fax above), stating your background in counselling, psychotherapy, or psychiatry.
